Enjoy the Benefits of a Spa-Like Chemical Peel From the Comfort of Your Own Home

You might be familiar with that quintessential scene from Sex and the City where the plucky Samantha Jones underwent a chemical peel and emerged with red, blistery skin so raw she couldn’t even attend her friend, Carrie Bradshaw’s, book release party.

Fortunately, this Hollywood reenactment is curated more for theatrics than accuracy. Chemical peels are very common in clinical practices and are among the top five most popular minimally invasive dermatological procedures performed in 2017, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In fact, nearly 1.4 million people opted for a chemical peel in 2017 alone, an increase of 1% from 2016.

Research in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology notes that “chemical peeling is a popular, relatively inexpensive, and generally safe method for treatment of some skin disorders and to refresh and rejuvenate skin,” adding that the procedure can stimulate new skin growth and improve the skin’s texture.

Researchers also found that chemical peels are effective in treating acne, photoaging, and melasma, and were also found to be useful when administered adjunctively with other topical therapies.

Some of the most popular chemical peels are known as superficial or “lunchtime” peels, a nod to their ease and minimal invasion. Superficial chemical peels typically use alpha-hydroxy acid or other mild acids to penetrate skin’s epidermis layer with gentle exfoliants. This treatment is known to treat skin spots, uneven skin, and acne, and to leave the face, neck, or chest looking refreshed.

Mandelic acid and hyaluronic acid are two of the most popular dermatological treatments that can leave skin feeling and looking rejuvenated—a far cry from the Sex and the City disaster that plagued Ms. Jones.

Mandelic Acid

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that is commonly used in chemical peels and at-home skincare treatments. Derived from bitter almonds, mandelic acid is used to treat skin inflammation, encourage the production of collagen, and help improve skin thickness and elasticity.

This dermal treatment is also used to treat certain types of acne and reduce the effects of dryness, which is regulated by sebum secretion.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in our bodies and plays a key role in retaining moisture. Dermatologists use hyaluronic acid to deliver powerful hydration that can strengthen skin’s outer barrier and improve skin’s elasticity.

When administered adjunctively with antioxidants, peptides, and stem cells, hyaluronic acid can help repair and hydrate dry skin.

Get the Benefits of a Chemical Peel in Your Daily Serum

Unfortunately, we don’t all have the luxury of sipping cosmos on weeknights or purchasing $400 shoes on the weekends, and we definitely can’t always make it to the dermatologist to receive a regular chemical peel.

Fortunately, the power of hyaluronic and mandelic acid also comes in a daily skin serum with day or night treatments options. Products like Allies of Skin’s hyaluronic acid serum delivers a daily boost of antioxidants, as well as Superoxide Dismutase and Resveratrol Ferment extract to heal skin and ease signs of damage. It can also improve skin’s moisture retention and strengthen skin’s outer barrier. Similarly, products like a mandelic acid peel can deliver a potent blend of mandelic, lactic, and salicylic acid to treat breakouts and uneven texture.
